Super Gals! ☆★☆★彡

Helloo~!
Today I want to share about an anime I've watched recently! ^^

I've grown out of my otaku phase but I still enjoy a few anime time to time. Back in the days I used to collect and own like 40GB of manga scans lol.. Anyway~ since the summer holidays, I've been trying to kill time and I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this anime :D If you haven't heard of it, it's called Super Gals!

Yep you guessed it! This anime revolves around the early gyaru subculture in Japan!
Like most anime, Super Gals! is adapted from the shoujo manga, Gals! written by Mihona Fujii. From the artwork, the series were produced in the late 1999-2002. The anime has 52 episodes and I loved every one of them!
The protagonist of the plot is Kotobuki Ran, a self-proclaimed #1 best gal in Shibuya. Although she's ditzy, competitive, simple-minded and not the brightest girl, she has a strong sense of justice, a big heart and determined to live her carefree life as a gyaru, which she gained a reputation as the most respected gal in Shibuya 109. So the #1 Gal title isn't far off because she's really well known in Shibuya and is always featured in magazines.
Along with Ran, her two best friends, Yamazaki Miyu and Hoshino Aya, also contribute a lot to the plot! They both have their own insecurities and troubled past but together, they form Super Gals! A close group of friends and anyone wish to have!

What I love about this anime is that it shows the early gyaru subculture, like a time machine back in time! The characters wear those infamous platform boots, colorful hawaiian accessories and their nails are always long and perfect! The gals are also very creative with their hairstyles unlike other anime where the characters only have one outfit/look.

You also get a glimpse of Shibuya, Para-para dance marathons, common gal-lingo, and gal rivalry between Ran and Honda Mami, "#1 Gal of Ikebukuro"
The Tan-Face Ganguro Trio!
Throughout the anime, Ran explains what is "Ironclad Rules of Gals". Joking aside, I think they can apply to many life situations whether you're gal or not. I've managed to compile a few rules~

Ironclad Rules of Gals:
  1. Never back out of a fight
  2. Never fight with an empty stomach
  3. Always win fairly
  4. If you want it, go get it
  5. Always get atleast 8 hours of sleep to prevent breakouts
  6. Girls gotta have heart
  7. Never seek or use dirty money
  8. Don't waste money
  9. Never save money, spend it right away (holla)
This is a story of friendship, individuality and romance all wrapped around a great humour. Bonuses that showcase the struggles of gyaru life too! I think we can all relate haha ;u; From dealing with unwanted attention, aggressive attitudes, or...
Parent's expectations...
Or unrequited love...
Or forgetting to do your homework because partying too much...
Or feeling like this...
All I can say is that if you haven't watch this anime, then you really should ^^ Heck, all gals should watch it! It is really something you can relate to, especially being in the gyaru subculture. Also, I laughed my butt off. Yup. Easily one of my favorite animes I've watched so far.

On top of that, I really admire and even idolize Kotobuki Ran (the same way I admire Naruto lol shhhh)! Although it's kinda cliche, this anime taught me a lot about individuality and valuing friendship. And that there is more to being gal than just lashes and fake nails. It's all about dedication, the right attitude and living life happy with no regrets. I love Super Gals! and I love it even more for teaching the respectful side of gyaru.
If you've watched this already, tell me what you think of it! I normally cannot stand the old-school artwork so I probably won't be reading the manga, but I had such a great time watching the anime!
Who is your favorite character? Mine would be Naka-sensei! And Ran-pyon of course~

And do you know any other anime/manga that is based off the gyaru subculture? I remember reading a manga called Galism but dropped it because the manga scans take forever to release.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this entry. I've also made a Facebook for anyone who wants to add and talk to me on there! The link is below my blog banner :3
Thanks for reading! xoxo
Catherine

  14. GALS! is mainly the reason I started gal! Or discovered it, for that matter. I personally think the manga is not oldskool at all (since I hate the old styles too) and I would definetly recommend reading it!

As for the anime, I have yet to finish it, because when I was watching it, it was only out up until ep 24 haha
